Friday 5: LBDI

Today we're going to have a long talk on what I believe to be truly unfashionable.
Poverty.

Next week I'm going to wear the same little black dress for 5 days, Monday- Friday,  in efforts to raise awareness and funds to combat poverty. It's called this the 'Little Black Dress Initiative' (LBDI). I'm not doing this alone, but as a member of the Junior League of Charlotte (JLC).

Let's face it, we are blessed!! Amen! We have more than we need but yet right in our same county, city, zip code and even neighborhoods there are those that are hungry and struggling to survive.

I'm not sure what it's going to feel like...
to not stand in my closet and choose from a plethora of garments,
or to not step into a freshly cleaned outfit (I will not be washing my dress to take full advantage of the experience)
or to wear black over and over (you gals know I rarely ever wear it)

But I do hope ...
I make a difference
I gain an appreciation for my blessings
I influence others to make an impact

I'll be sharing lots of info about LBDI every day next week as well as all about my experience.

Please consider supporting my personal fundraising goals by clicking this link below
https://connect.clickandpledge.com/Organization/jlcharlotte . . .

Here's an overview ....

1.       What is the Junior League of Charlotte
The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, to developing the potential of women and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  The JLC was founded in 1926 and in its 90 years, has provided more than 1.5 million hours of volunteer service and more than $13.5 million to the community.  Our membership includes almost 1900 committed volunteer members in the Charlotte and surrounding community.

2.       What is the Little Black Dress Initiative?
The Little Black Dress Initiative was pioneered by the Junior League of London who, during London Fashion week, wore the same black dress to work, parties, dinners and events to raise funds and increase awareness of poverty in the city.  The campaign was such a success, the group called on Junior League chapters across the world to host their own LBDIs throughout the year.  LBDI is a week-long, social media driven fundraising campaign that uses the iconic LBD to raise awareness about poverty and its effects. Participants wear one LBD for five consecutive days and are encouraged to harness the power of their social media platforms to drive online donations, which are collected through a charitable fundraising site.  The purpose of LBDI is not just to wear the same dress for 5 days.  The dress serves a purpose to spark conversation.  It provides a chance for us, as Junior League of Charlotte members, to discuss the needs in our community and what we can do to help.

3.
 Where will my donations go?
The funds raised make possible the work and mission of the Junior League.  All donations are fully tax deductible.  Just some ways the JLC is addressing the devastating effects of poverty are:
o    Providing more than 400 children more than 1,000 immunizations through Big Shots Saturday so they can attend school and stay healthy.
o    Annually delivering almost 10,000 backpacks of food for the weekends and/or holidays to Reid Park Academy students as well as providing a mobile food pantry with fresh fruits and vegetables through our partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank
o    Teaching both children and adults how to prepare healthy meals and helping families plan meals based on their Loaves & Fishes food allotment through our partnership with AdaCooks!.
o    The JLC Give Kids a Smile team assists in providing free dental care to over 70 children per year and also provides education to elementary children on dental health.
o    Assisting grieving children cope with the loss of a loved one at Chameleon’s Journey.
o    Our partnership with EmpowHERment allows our members to mentor girls in grades 6 through 12 at 4 at-risk schools within CMS.  The mentoring events provide a unique forum for mentees and mentors to bond with other women and girls through shared learning experiences, connections to networks and exposure to community resources & issues.
o    The JLC Promising Pages team works to distribute books at Title I schools and community outreach events like the Magic Book Party Programs at Reid Park Academy.
         4
.       Is there a poverty problem locally?
Yes!  Here are just a few shocking statistics:
o    50,000 children in Charlotte are currently living in poverty
o    Almost 1 in 5 children in Charlotte are currently living in poverty
o    Over half a million North Carolinian children are living in poverty
o    Over 4,000 children in CMS schools are reported homeless
o    1 in 4 children in North Carolina are living in a household where there is uncertainty regarding access to food
o    134,000 Charlotteans are living in poverty
o    12% of North Carolinians are homeless

Thank you for reading along!!! And not to worry I've still got some fashionable things to share.
I've rounded up 5 LBD's in a variety of shapes sure to flatter every gal ...

Modern Lines

We all have our favorite shops.  Whether it's for coffee and baked goods, a local wine bar, home decor or for unique clothing and accessories.

A couple years ago I found one of my favorite shops and the best thing I ever walked out with was a dear gal pal.  It's owner is a treasured relationship that I cherish no matter the distance between us. I love any excuse to leave the Queen City to visit this small town on the water.

This shop caught my eye for it's beautiful home decor and linens (and all the blue and white I could ever want) but it has grown so much, offering a wide range of must haves.  From furniture to clothing, baby stuff to entertaining ware, linens to jewelry, gifts to art and even design services .... it basically has it all!

An unexpected trip to the coast a couple weeks ago allowed me to have a surprise stop in!  Typically I scoop up home decor or local handmade creations but this time I spotted this dress and had to have it.

It blends modern and fun design with the classics.  Allow me to define.  The mirrored v-neckline (front and back) with choker combined with the black and white windowpane print creates a mix of elements that's sure to have gals stopping you to ask 'Where did you get that dress?'.  My response 'Beaufort Linen Company, You must check them out!'.

This dress pairs modern bodice lines with classic grid graphics that can go from casual with a pair of sandals or wedges to professional with a pair of pumps.  Gals, I literally go through the styling options in my mind when selecting garments.  And don't forget the unlimited amount of color you can add with accessories.

I thought I would share with you a round up of my current favorites at the shop but there are just too many and a constant influx of new things added everyday.  So you must visit their website to shop around and follow on Instagram to stay up to date on their latest arrivals.

I promise you'll want some of everything! And just maybe you'll add this dress to your wardrobe :)

Trench Dress

When you take a twist on the classic trench and make it a dress you get a perfect blend of timeless style and femininity!

I love the structured cotton fabric and a-line silhouette but my favorite element is the dusty pink color.  It also comes in tan and navy, but I couldn't resist this pink. It is such a soft and unexpected neutral.  Because it's a light and undersaturated color it pairs well with dark rich shades like brown, black and navy.  And how sweet would it look with stripes!

Wear this dress sleeveless this season but in cooler temps layer with a striped tee or dress shirt underneath.

I also plan to swap out the sash belt with a wide leather belt.

Gals, this is one of those pieces that you'll have in your wardrobe for years to come.  Invest in the classics!

Friday 5: Night Out Tops

TGIF! This has been a fantastic week gals!  Lost of big happenings that have kept me hard at work. Stay tuned :)

For today's Friday 5, it's all about tops for a night out. Because Mr has Saturday night off!!! #YAY  Practicing medicine in the ER has him working almost every weekend and lots of nights. We are taking full advantage of this rare weekend evening together!

When it comes to a night out either a date with your man or with the gals getting gussied up is part of the fun.  It's an occasion to look snazzy.  I like pairing a fun neckline that shows a little skin with a pair of skinny jeans and heels.  And definitely a fun statement earring!

Here are some tops sure to have you feeling fabulous ...

Shoulders & Squares

Spring is all about shoulders, stark white and row and rows of gingham squares!

This look encompasses those sweet elements and then some.  I added a bright pop of color with turquoise earrings and several inches (without teasing my hair) in these amazing wedges.

I love the feminine details on the sleeves with delicate bow ties and ruffles!

Jump Right In

Ready to jump into this new week ... almost.

Thought I'd share some outtakes with you this post because in real life, I'm often running around 'oh wait I forgot this' and eventually I'm out the door and ready.  Red lights and rear view mirrors are for lipstick right?!

I love a good jumpsuit.  It comes from my obsession with 70's glam fashion (not that hippie stuff ugh). Jumpsuits are sooooo chic!  But they can be tricky.  The key is to get the rise/proportions right.  Because movement and being comfortable is a must. I love that this one has a tie waist for added shape and a simple zipper down the back for easy on and off.  No gal wants to spend 5 mins just trying to go to the ladies room.

Solid darker shades are best but I will tell you I have an orange and ivory zebra print jumpsuit that I rock in the summer time.  Now that one is definitely for the weekend.  But a dark jumpsuit is perfectly acceptable for the office. Just keep you accessories understated and maybe add a blazer or scarf.

Don't be intimidated by the 'onesie' concept.  Try them on and embrace minor alterations.  I'm going to be hemming this one so I'm not stuck wearing these high heels with it every time.

Jump in!

Some Silliness :)

Friday 5: American Pie

With this cold weather hitting the south all I'm dreaming of is being outside in the warm sunshine.
The first few years Mr and I were dating we used to go on picnics all the time.  In fact it was on a picnic by the water where he told me he loved me for the first time.  I'm definitely bringing back those sweet picnic dates.

These pieces have that all American, let go on a picnic (and eat pie!) vibe ...

Lucky Charm

"The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good on you" - Coco Chanel

So with that, I wear emerald green.  It compliments my red locks and is such a rich saturated color like that of the precious jewel.

Let's talk about this classic, flattering for all wrap dress. Wrap dresses synch the waist creating a feminine silhouette.  This dress in particular elongates with a v-neck bodice, vertical seams and in a midi length you're sure to do a twirl or two :)

The dress truly speaks for itself so I just added touches of shine with gold in my earrings and studded pumps.

Note:  These pumps were a huge treat yourself moment.  I squirreled away extra cash for several months and when generously gifted some money for Christmas I pulled the trigger! I love the lower heel so that I can wear them with ease and the sparkle of the studs.  The hardest part was waiting to wear them when they arrived at my front door.  I immediately had to take them to the best local shoe repair (Gals, 4th floor Belk in Southpark Mall, Charlotte) to have a rubber sole adhered.  This is important to protect the pointed toe from scuffs!

Wearing your favorite color is like a lucky charm, I find it instantly makes you feel pretty and gives a boost of confidence.

And with St. Patricks Day on Friday I'm pinch free in this dress :)

Grid Lock

And it's Monday.  New week, new goals (I have a lot to accomplish!) and a whole lot of green in the forecast since it's St. Patrick's day on Friday. Green is my second favorite color to wear (white is #1), because nothing compliments a red mane like emerald.
Side note: Despite my fiery locks and billions of freckles I'm don't have a lot of Irish in me - I'm primarily German and English (according to Mamma) ... Maybe one day I'll check into one of those ancestry searches.

So I told you my gingham game was going strong, and clearly I'm not exaggerating.  But this dress while advertised as a gingham print, to me 'grid' is more appropriate.  It's such a large graphic pattern.  Gingham is better saved for a smaller scale. In classic black and white these crisp lines make a great palette for style!

While the dress is sharp and fitted I wanted to contrast with soft elements and color.  So I added a silk scarf in a gold hue that has it's own architectural sense with black angled lines and an emerald green topper coat. I've shared with you gals before that almost all of my silk scarves are vintage and while hunting for treasures from the past isn't for most, I'm happy to share that these pretty printed squares are making a come back in stores!

This dress is fitted to the body, constructed in super stretch making it a comfortable and flattering fit.  The bodice is designed with a cut in shape at the shoulders but don't let that intimate you.  A racer back bra (a must have) aligns just right.

This look balances the starkness of a graphic black and white print with the softness of silk and color.
