Midi Skirt 4 Ways

Thanksgiving is tomorrow! This day is all about cherishing time with those we love and sharing a yummy meal. When it comes to significant occasions I believe you should dress accordingly. It shows yourself & others that this time matters ... but you also need to be comfortable to cook & play!

I find a midi skirt to be a pretty option! In a light cotton fabric there's plenty of room for movement, a feminine shape and lots of style options.

Here's 4 ways to style a midi skirt ...

DENIM

I absolutely love pairing denim with everything!
It has a timeless and casual look.

BLAZER

If your attending a more formal dinner or like us, going out to dinner,
a blazer offers a polished look.

SWEATSHIRT

Sweatshirts have come a long way from the days of my childhood and college.
They have the same soft comfort but in designs and patterns that are modern.

SWEATER

In the South we don't always get a cold Thanksgiving.
This year we will definitely be in sweaters!
It seems fitting to be cozy at the holidays.

Little White Skirt

Wearing white is a beloved tradition in the warm months. This isn't just because it's pretty but necessary in keeping cool. For me I have an abundance of crisp white shirts and a few pairs of white jeans that I love to style for a fresh and bright look. A crisp white skirt is my choice for dressy occasions.  I find skirts not only comfortable and cool but so feminine!

For this look I thought about styling with a matching white top for a monochromatic look, or with a bright bold color but I decided to go classic with black for a strong contrast. I rarely wear black but I find it paired with white to be sharp & timeless.

Style Tip: For longer skirts balance the volume with a smaller/sleeveless top and for shorter skirts a top with longer/voluminous sleeves.

I like to add lots of gold jewelry particularly with neutrals and solid colors.

Don't forget to twirl a time or two!

Miss Americana

Gals, I love America. I'm proud to live in this country and of the principles of freedom it was founded on.

So much that our family contributed to protecting them. Several years ago Ryan served in the US Navy as a medical officer following the completion of school.  He even deployed to the Middle East for nearly a year with a Marine infantry battalion as their Battalion Surgeon. Gracious that was a hard time!

So naturally it makes me happy to see Americana style trending.  Think of it as a style that celebrates America's heritage & culture. It incorporates casual elements like denim, our flag colors, and antique patterns like those found in quilting.

Quilting is an art.  I have a friend who's mother is an amazing quilter and made Vivian the most exquisite one as a gift before she was born.  I have it hanging on display in her room. It is an art to piece the fabric shapes together with various patterns of stitching. It fascinates me!

This skirt really exemplifies Americana style with the quilting and gingham print. Now, no gal wants to go around looking like Martha Washington so the key is to pair it with modern pieces, like this acid wash ruffled chambray top and heeled booties. Knotting your shirt gives a chic look and adds shape.
I added a hint of color and shine with my jewelry.

I haven't been including my purses in my outfit posts but I'm going to try a bit more.  This one I received for Christmas last year and I carry it daily! It's the perfect size for carrying everything I need. It's comfortable as a crossbody (handsfree is essential when wrangling a toddler on errands) and the color is rich and neutral complimenting any outfit casual or dressy. It comes in several colors and style variations.

Sweet & Summery

There’s something about a sweet summery outfit that gives you the feeling that you’re at a vacation destination. That’s what makes this season so fun, the ability to dress like you’re somewhere far away even if you’re not. It’s also nice that this Summer we can actually leave our homes.

Now, I want to fully acknowledge that this look isn’t for everyone.

First, a short top MUST be paired with a high waisted bottom (covers your belly button) that lays lightly on the waist (meaning it doesn’t pinch). This, at most, exposes just a slight peek of your torso and it’s at the most narrow part.

This top in a light cotton has smocked puff sleeves and waist. This creates a comfortable shape and the ability to wear it off the shoulder.  When doing so the top sits a bit lower for a not-so-cropped fit.

I chose a light and airy midi skirt for a dressy look.  If you prefer pants, I’d choose a wide leg.

Raffia sandals and handbags add the perfect summery touch!

Tropical Twirl

Gals, this skirt may just be the prettiest piece in my wardrobe!  The print, colors and feminine details in the skirt are just, well, pretty! If I ever got ahold of a bolt of fabric in this print you'd see it adorning some drapes, bedding or pillows.

I love how soft the colors are without being too muted and the purple birds throughout spark a ton of joy. My Mamma loves birds and the older I get I find myself incorporating their beauty in our home.

In a light weight cotton poplin fabric with delicate tiered ruffles, this skirt is comfortable, cool and moves so beautifully when you walk (or twirl). The length is perfect for heels or flats allowing you to style dressy or casual. I paired with a ruffled crisp white shirt and slides but with a cotton tank and sandal it would be the prettiest casual outfit.

This skirt is a quintessential example for me of how a garment is an outward reflection of who you are.  This skirt conveys my style with colors, print and design that makes me feel pretty and smile a little bigger when I wear it.

I encourage you to wear pieces that portray the prettiness you love.

Friday Favorites: Tie Dye

TGIF! What a great first week of Fall ... well it's not technically Fall (9/22) and it certainly doesn't feel like it but Labor Day has past and since school, or something like it, is back in session we'll just say it's Fall.

Speaking of school, Vivian has had a wonderful first week back at preschool in the 2's class.  She's going all 5 days of the week this year and I'm so happy for her.  The hardest part is trying to contain her excitement as we wait in the carpool line for drop off.

Speaking of fun, is there a kid out there who hasn't created a tie dye t-shirt at a birthday party or summer camp? It's one of those essential childhood crafts. The bright colors and psychedelic patterns are bold and playful but they can also be very youthful and casual.

They key to incorporating the smeared palette of colors without looking like a teen, is in the design of the garment and shades of the colors. In a blouse, skirt or dress you eliminate the adolescent vibes found in loungewear.

Here are some tie dye pieces that are chic and colorful for us seasoned gals ...

Tip: Darker neutrals are great to balance the colors in a tie dye print
