Mamma Monday: Chic Mom

Happy Monday Mammas! This year I've made some very dear Mamma gal pals in my MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group and there've been several strong discussions among us regarding my opposition to leggings - they are NOT pants!!! I've typed that over and over again on this blog and I promise you I'll be typing it several more times :)

The great thing about real friends is that you don't have to agree to love one another and it's our differences that add perspective and laughter to the relationships.

Disclaimer: This post is in NO way one of judgement but one I hope is one of encouragement.

Why leggings are NOT pants:

Pants are to conceal our nakedness - leggings fail to do this as much as dipping yourself in black paint would.

I could go on but I'll just leave you with this, you don't leave the house in your bathrobe or slippers (please say you don't!) so exercise modesty and treat leggings as you do your bra and panties leaving them as 'under' pieces!

I want to shut down the 'Hot Mess Mom Culture' that's running rampant. You do NOT have to have messy hair in a bun, wear oversized tattered shirts and leggings.  Yes, motherhood has you juggling a lot and on less sleep but you can still present yourself well. Mammas, we put a lot of effort into caring for our littles, let's put a little care into our presentation.  I promise you will feel better and face the day with more confidence if you do.
I'm not saying you need to be beauty pageant primped but there are few things you can do to turn the frumpy upside down to chic!

Practical tips to looking put together:

1. Wear Earrings - a little bit of shine will make YOU shine

2. Printed Tops - If you're a Mamma you attract dirty little hands and faces that want to rub all over you. Prints hide stains as well as conceal in a slimming way.

3. Dark Bottoms - also hide stains and are slimming.

4.Semi- fitted tops - an in-between from a baggy t-shirt to a fitted blouse. It simply skims the body allowing room for comfort yet a hint of polish.  Cuffing the sleeves is one of my favorite touches to a basic tee.  It hits the arm at a more flattering place and adds just a touch of detailed effort.

5. Distressed Loose Jeans - They're a softer fit for comfort and movement and since they're already weathered additional damage blends right in.  So you can go ahead and get rough with your kiddos!

6. Simple Make-up - under-eye concealer (this primer is a MUST), eyebrows, mascara, blush and lipgloss.

7. Casual Coiffed Hairdo - a brushed out basic pony tail or headband pull back your hair and you won't look like you just rolled out of bed.

8.  Slim Sneaker - NOT your running shoes but more of a flat bottom pair that has a little color of detail to show off your personality. I chose a pair with a little purple since it's one of my favorites.  I'm currently hunting for a pair with pink glitter :)

Here are some very comfortable and practical outfits I've put together to inspire you ...

This Fleece is incredibly soft and a much more polished option to a hoodie sweatshirt.
These Joggers are an excellent alternative to leggings and sweatpants.
I prefer ones of a synthetic nylon fabric and that aren't too baggy.

A semi- fitted printed tee, and this one in tie dye (currently a hot trend) along with loose distressed jeans is a modern look that can hold up to toddlers.
A little front tuck of the tee creates just enough shape to your waist.

Graphic tees like this one are also a hot trend.  Elevate the look with a dark pair of wide leg crops.  I'm obsessed with this design for the comfort, slimming effect on the legs and practicality of the length.  You can wear with heals, flats or sneakers.

I won't argue that sweatshirts aren't comfortable, but try one with a little bit of design detail like a puff sleeve.  Dark jeans that are cropped are most practical and these with a little stretch aren't so suffocating like a skinny jean.

Stretch a little farther and swap pants for a midi skirt.  Maxi skirts are too long and cumbersome.
This one has an elastic waist so it clings to the waist for shape and provides a comfortable fit.  The print is very neutral, dark and feminine with the tiny florals. So slimming and hides stains. Take a durable denim shirt and tie the hem to create more shape on your body.
Personally I find that rolling the cuffs is slimming as it shows off the smallest part of your arm and prevents that sloppy look when your sleeves hang over your hand. Similar to the way a v-neck elongates your face.

Don't dress like a regular mom - dress like a chic mom!

Dress Beautifully in Casual, Comfortable & Chic Pieces

XOXO Sarah-Louise

I'm so glad to hear someone else say that leggings aren't pants! I work at a large university and see entirely too many young women wearing leggings as pants on campus. I don't want to see all that nor should you want complete strangers to see all that!
