Friday Favorite: Jean Queen

TGIF! This week was anything but typical. I'm still fighting hard against this horrible germ but I can feel small improvements - I can actually mutter sounds even if they do sound like a squeaky mouse but the all night violent cough refuses to leave UGH. I did made it to the gym yesterday for the first time in 6 days and gals it felt so good!

You know what else feels good, when you find a great fitting pair of jeans! Since having Vivian Louise you can now call me the 'Jean Queen'. Outside of church and evenings out I'm in blue jeans Every. Single. Day. My sister was actually laughing because literally I do ALL the things in blue jeans. She even called me out on changing out of my 'nice' jeans when I get home from an outing into my 'toddler approved house jeans'. Several years ago she realized that there is a person who actually chills in their home in blue jeans.  That person is me #jeanqueen.

This picture hopefully showcases the differences in the leg/hem openings of each style.

Now, this doesn't mean I own a bazillion pairs.  I have one drawer and less than 10 are blue, 1 pair is black and 1 pair is coated black. Now, when it comes to white jeans I have far too many and I have no apologies about it.  I'll share about those as we get closer to Spring.

Gals, jeans are the workhorse of your wardrobe. They are paired with casual cotton tops for home, dressier tops for daytime outings with flats or sneakers and completely jazzed up with sassy tops and heels for evenings.  They wear a lot of tops making them versatile and worthy of intentional investment. Meaning, streamline your denim inventory to include functional and flattering pairs!

Tip:  I wear my jeans about 4-5 times before washing.  I launder them inside out and NEVER dry them. And I always iron out the wrinkles!

Here are the Fab 5 I wear all the time ...

SKINNY

These are the ultimate skinny jean (in my opinion) because the rise is higher holding you in, the color is darker with shading that adds contour making your legs look long and lean, the fabric has the right amount of stretch for movement but not too much that they loose their shape and slide and super soft with Tencel in them.  The length is crucial in a skinny jean.  You never want bunching at the ankle so if you find a pair that fits just right but too long - HEM them! Tailors can work magic to keep the original hem style.

I've had this pair for a few years now and they are THE pair when I want to look and feel sassy! Skinny jeans are the perfect style for fun nights out with an embellished top & heels for a more polished and modern look.
They're also great for day with an more voluminous or tunic top to balance the proportions.

STRAIGHT

These are currently my most favorite! And the most flattering on EVERY gal!!! In a higher rise and straight cut they are the most slimming.  These have just the tee tiniest amount of stretch and very subtle shading for a classic clean look. They skim the legs unlike the skinny which is like a second skin. This allows for easy movement and is extremely elongating on the legs. I'm petite and super self conscious about my legs and these help me feel confident in how they look. #winner

DEMI BOOT CROP

These are very similar to the straight with just a tad more of an opening at the hem which is ankle length on this pair.  An ankle length jean is hands down the way to go so that you can wear absolutely any pair of shoes you want! Even for boots you don't have to worry about shoving extra fabric in them. The little kick of flair on these is fun, modern and subtle which makes them more of a staple piece rather that a 'here today gone tomorrow' trend.
I also want to add that button front is slimming on the lower abdomen which is a common area of concern for gals. I also think it adds just a little more shine and classic look :)

DISTRESSED MOM

Gals, these are my favorite fun jeans.  'Mom' jeans are all the rage! In a lighter wash, higher rise and straight/tapered leg they are basically what your Mamma wore in the 80's & 90's with modern touches.
They're super fashionable right now and not to mention crazy comfortable. I love the higher rise, looser leg and modern distressing. In fact they have a few new rips gifted from Vivian haha. These are a splurge but I was able to find them online for 70% off #winning. Normally I would advise against a wash this light as it isn't as slimming but in this roomier straight design they don't cling to the leg.  I've worn these casually and dressed up.

BOYFRIEND

These are more of a lower rise and much looser fit.  They're casual and don't really cling to any part of your lower body. The trick is to have them fit the hips and have the rest a little loose but NOT baggy! That would make you look sloppy and bigger. I would stray away from tops that are super fitted and supper loose because you'll create unflattering proportions. Opt for semi-fitted tops and a loose tuck to add some shape.
Boyfriend jeans are great for day and weekends but I would save them for when you already have an inventory of the more classic jeans in your closet.

Blue Jean Baby!

Here are my tips for scouting out a good pair of jeans:
1. Darker wash with subtle shading - slimming & hides stains #momlife
2. Slight stretch - too much and they loose shape, slide down and too clingy
3. Mid-High rise - holds in place, flattering on your torso, creates small waist line & great for tucking.
4. Back Pockets hit at the bottom of your derriere - too high adds width and lower will flatten
5. Ankle length - allows for any shoe pairing

Not so Basic

Gals, 'Basic' is a trending word to describe something/actions that is mainstream/popular or just 'plain'.  Well I don't like either word .... I prefer simple or classic.

From a glance this outfit is 'basic' but let me assure you it's far from ordinary.

My go-to is a white top.  I have countless.  I got it from my Mamma, and Grandma. Paired with jeans and flats, it's effortless, comfortable and more than just classic - it's classy!

The trick to avoid looking 'basic' is to keep the pieces modern and with detail.

Now I know this post is taking a focus on the white top and jeans look but I have to take a turn and share with you the AMAZINGNESS that is these skinny jeans!  Gals, I actually feel and look skinny in them.  I do not have skinny legs and these jeans make them look longer and leaner.

They are a higher rise, which can be hard for me because I have a super short torso ... my hips and ribs are just a couple inches apart. But these are just perfect and allow for shorter tops. The coloring and softness just right.  I promise you will LOVE & LIVE in these jeans. Go now and get a pair!

PS If you bring in an old pair of jeans you can get $20 off a new pair :) #yourwelcome

Now the white top, it's a button up with a collar but the modern detailing is in the tiers. Not Basic.
It's super soft and easy to wear casually with jeans or with dress pants/skirts.

Side Note: For my fellow nursing Mammas it's perfect!!

Oh, I can't forget to talk about these flats.  They were included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale back in July and sold out almost immediately during the pre-sale.  I took Vivian Louise to the mall during the sale to give it a peak before I ordered online and sure enough to my surprise there was a pair of these flats on the table.  I quickly checked the size and it was a 6!  I slipped my foot in and score!  Next thing I know I was at the register.  These shoes were pricey so I had to take advantage of the sale.
The pointed toe, front slit and d'orsay design is chic and polished. Also leg lengthening!

Question, do you gals want sizing??  I've never included it but wonder if it would be helpful.

White Lace

I'd like to say I planned this red white and blue look in honor of Presidents Day but it was just coincidence.  But, since today is a day set aside to honor this country's leaders, I will share with you this....

1Timothy 2:1-2
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

My obsession for white tops is going to live on forever! Lately, I find myself really loving lace. I remember shopping for my wedding gown and despising the fabric on myself. I'm still not crazy about lace dresses however I adore the feminine texture for separates.

This top is constructed in a swing style; easy breeze for the upcoming warm temps. It's full of detail from seam to seam.  The lace is more of an eyelet design and the trim is in thick woven fabric for added emphasis to the shape.  If I had to pick a sleeve length to be my favorite it would definitely be elbow.  It's slimming on the arm and not so standard, making a piece more interesting.

Last week for Valentine's Day these lace up red pumps made their debut.  Red shoes are just classic and fun.  Lace up flats are everywhere and I have a pair, but I don't find them to be comfortable.  This block heel pair is not only better fitting, they're dressy enough for work and chic enough for casual styling too.  The tasseled laces add the perfect touch.

There's just something about a white top and jeans that's simply timeless.  Crisp and Cool.

Ready Set Reds

Red is a powerful color.  It's bold and bright and grabs attention.  According to the old song 'Lady in Red' men love a gal in red.  I have to say I agree, it's my red hair that grabbed Mr's attention :)

I want to talk about pops vs continuity.  There's the concept of styling where one element of color is added to a neutral look.  It showcases that one element of color such as shoes, statement jewelry or handbag.

I prefer continuity, where the elements flow throughout the entire look.  Today's look is all about a stream of red.  Now, the shades of red are not all the same which creates depth and interest.  I'm not a matchy matchy gal.

I also like to mix my casual and dressy pieces.  It's more unexpected and a great way to balance out your wardrobe.  This tweed jacket with it's gold buttons is very ladylike while the striped muscle tank  in stripes is very casual.  The jeans are polished in a dark wash while still casual in nature paired with my super shiny shoes in bright patent leather create a nice mix.  These shoes are my MOST FAVORITE shoe design!!! I have this shoe in patent black and brown croc (these shoes are a post all in themselves - stay tuned).

The reds, textures and prints in this look all compliment each other creating a continuity of reds amongst themselves.

Rather than one element of color in your next look, try going more cohesive tying in a color throughout.

Paisley

Paisley is a print I've had an off and on relationship with.  It can be very reminiscent of the 80's and 90's and let's be honest that's not my favorite era to embrace stylistically.  But in the right colors and pattern it can be very pretty.

I have to giggle a little because Mr says paisley prints look like amebas; it's not his favorite.

This blouse is a bit on the boho side of style, but I like branching outside my typical ladylike box.  Although, it does have lace detailing and pastel coloring mixed with the rust so I'm not totally abandoning my girly preferences.

I paired with skinny jeans, over the knee suede boots and a long necklace handmade of natural beads by a local NC designer for a casual weekend look.

Camel + Black

Camel and Black, a traditional, neutral and contrastingly sharp pairing. This isn't basic nor is it plain.  I detest those words.  It's classic and timeless.

I find there is great beauty and elegance in a clean and uncomplicated look.

I love prints, embellishments and all the color I can get but it's nice to reset with a clean slate.

I believe that when you are wearing a neutral look that you should add some shine with jewelry and a soft print like animal in a belt, handbag or shoes.  Python is one of my favorites! Keep your jewelry and print in a minimalistic size.

Add some sophistication with camel & black.

Shades of Sugar

I would wear head-to-toe white everyday if I could - I know, broken record, I say that a lot!  But since I'm not a boring gal, I don't, and it goes again the Southern rule of 'no white after Labor Day and before Easter'.

But sometimes I just want a no fuss, monochromatic blank canvass.  Quite honestly I think it's super chic.  The way to pull it off without looking plain is to incorporate texture and slight variances of the color.  My slouchy tee is a linen blend, and in a buttercream while my jeans are fitted in a cotton bright white.  I chose a pair of tan peep toe booties to add richness.

Try a monochromatic look but keep it simple with minimal jewelry and let your lipstick and nail polish add the pops of color.

And remember to squeeze in those summer whites - because August is the Sunday of Summer!
