Friday Favorites: Encouragement

Gals, I'm currently on vacation ... ok we are just visiting Mr's parents on the NC coast but hey we are away from home and Mr's not working (he rarely has time off #marriedtomedicine).
We are even squeezing in some time with friends :)

So I'm soaking up ALL the family fun time!

And even though this was a short week, since we left Wednesday afternoon, I promised I'd do better so I'm squeezing in a Friday post for you.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes to encourage you this weekend. I pulled them from my Pinterest board ... I've been reunited with Pinterest a lot lately. I've been pinning things for our home since we are decorating and soon renovatio, I've discovered lots of neat things as a first time Mamma for me and the baby, and of course fashion inspiration.

Gals, I firmly believe in getting dressed every day.  Yes, I chill in jeans.
Treat each day like the precious gift that it is and give it your best.

Always start the day with a grateful heart!

I highly recommend exercise for the 'something'.  You will NEVER regret a workout!

PRIORITIES!!!

The Mamma life is full of challenges but it's the BEST life.

Reach out to someone and let them know just how appreciated and special they are.

Friday 5: Festive Tops

TGIF! And it’s going to be a good one! Mr is off of work this weekend (that NEVER happens!) ok well technically he’s on call Saturday but I’m choosing to believe that he won’t have to go in and I can soak up two days in a row of his greatness.  The times of just us two are quickly coming to an end so we plan to take advantage.  We never did get around to taking a baby moon (see reason above) but we are going to go on a dinner date, decorate our home for Christmas and work on organizing the nursery because gals, it’s 90% done!!!!  I’m so excited I can’t stand it! After we organize and put away all of her gifts and I finish her drapes I’ll be able to share pictures with you.
We are also helping to decorate our church for Christmas Saturday morning – it’s over 100 years old and such a beauty!  We are going to try and squeeze in a tour of the maternity center I’ll be delivering at after – ekkk it’s getting real!

Now that our calendars are turned to December tis the season for festive parties and that means festive outfits. Ruffles, bows, plaid, velvet and sequins - I've rounded up a bit of everything for you! Personally, I’ll be in a black maternity dress accessorized with sparkly baubles and furs.

BUT, if I didn’t have the bump I’d be wearing one  of these party tops – In fact I think I’m going to order the ruffled off the shoulder one for Valentine’s Day next year J

Friday 5: All about the Texture

TGIF! The end of this work week is welcomed with open arms! I just have to get through these meetings and my weekly presentations and then I’m free.  It totally sounds like a hate my job but gals, being a sick Mamma while having a demanding career isn’t exactly the happiest of situations but hey, girl bosses don’t cry they push through!

Bonus: I received some sparkle with an unexpected date night with Mr last night – just a casual dinner and some shopping but it was truly nice to spend some time together.

So while we were shopping, I happen to come across a few things that I just have to have.  He just simply shakes his head.
Shopping isn’t as fun when you’re growing a belly but I have next year to look forward to and accessories (shoes, handbags, jewelry) always fit.
This is the season for texture;  Knits, suede, velvet, fur, tweed, etc…

So here’s what I found to add to my closet …

Taupe Suede Jacket:  I pulled the trigger and bought this!  I don’t own a suede jacket and I’m in love with the taupe color.  It will compliment everything.  I went with my normal size – just won’t be zipping it up until next year J

Red Suede Booties:  I didn’t feel like trying them on, but I can assure you I’m going to revisit and more than likely take them home.  I love the bright color and the wearable heel.  Jeans or dresses these red suede shoes will stop traffic!

Metallic Pleated Skirt:  I ordered this one earlier this week.  Slightly silly since I have NO waist to even try it on but I love it and envision myself wearing it all year long! Can’t wait to style it next year.

Snake Skin Bag:  Gals it was love at first sight! Even though Mr just gifted me a designer bag at my baby shower (sharing on Monday) I’m obsessed with this one and it’s #1 on my Christmas list!!! It’s chic, edgy and you know I love all things animal when it comes to fashion.

Lace Top:  I actually stumbled across this one on Instagram.  It has delicate feminine details with the lace neckline and cap sleeves.  It will be nice postpartum since it’s a loose fit but will help me feel pretty as my figure transitions.

Embracing texture will add tons of style to your look!!!

Friday 5: Walking in Whites

I know that here in the South we don't dare wear our white shoes after Labor Day But honestly, the bright whites are a fresh contrast to all the dark hues of the cold season. It just breaks all the rules.
Now 'Winter White' is perfectly acceptable.

Winter white is the same as ivory, cream, off-white, whatever you want to call it. It's just not the bright bleached white.

I already have the tasseled loafers - they are in compliance as they are an ivory color.

Skirt the Rules Gals and walk in white this Winter! ... I think I may have to in these booties!

Here are my favorite pairs ...

Friday 5: Leopard Love

TGIF! Friday's are always busy in the office UGH I have to present at our weekly afternoon meetings and all I can think about is flying the coop and turning the work off.

This weekend is packed full of fun.  Tonight I'm gathering with some gal pals from church, tomorrow a ladies lunch then our church's Fall Festival (it's THE event of the year with bounce houses, hay rides, dessert contest and fireworks!!!) and Sunday after church I'm headed to Raleigh to visit some gal pals since I have to be there for work on Tuesday.

Again I say TGIF!

This week's Friday 5 is full of leopard love - because I seriously LOVE leopard.  I have it in all aspects of my wardrobe and even in some home decor. So I couldn't limit it to just 5 pieces so I just multiplied it giving you ample options.
Even with my baby bump I've added a top & dress in maternity designs.

Leopard is a neutral, so style it accordingly.  Treat it as you would a tan, brown or black because all of those hues are elements of the print.  You can even get bold and mix it with florals or stripes!

Ladies - add some leopard love to your life!

Friday 5: Lemons

TGIF! It's been a while since I've done a Friday 5 post ... let's not count how many Fridays!  I'm sorry gals, I want to say life has been busy but I truly despise the phrase "I'm busy". Like who isn't'??!!! I don't know anyone who just sits around bored.  And can we please not compare busyness? I've been hearing it for years "try balancing with kids" or "just wait til you have kids".
Ladies, kids or no kids one's responsibilities and commitments are no less significant.

I feel like I'm on a rant but we have to do better. I posted a quote on instagram this past Wednesday about lifting each other up; being a cheerleader not a competitor.
You don't have to have the same interests or schedules to support one another and take interest.  Embrace each other and the things in our lives that make us us.

Like this blog. I LOVE writing it. I love hustling at my job, exercising (don't even get me started on the various forms of working out and how everyone's gym or class is better - just sweat the way you want it's all about being strong & healthy!), teaching Sunday School, being on the VBS committee, holding a leadership/committee chair position in the Junior League, keeping up my home (not the cleaning the decorating), and most importantly loving my family.  Yes, just us two is a family!

Let's turn some negative lemons into lemonade ... or better yet limoncello! Cheers to the weekend!

How chic is citrus for Summer?!
If you know me in real life or have been reading along over the past 3 1/2 years you know I love lemons!  Every year my birthday cake is lemon.  My kitchen is decorated with lemon accents, I own a lemon dress, top and a gorgeous pendant necklace Mr gave me for my 31st birthday.
I'd have so much more but I must hold back.

Here are some lemon printed sundresses I've rounded up for you ...

Friday 5: Pearl Studded Shoes

TGIF!  It's been a few weeks since I've done a Friday 5 post, sorry gals.  Today I'm talking pearls on your piggies.  I mean nothing says classy like pearls and now you can wear them from your head down to your toes.

Friday 5: Pants Party

TGIF!!! Let's just take a moments to give thanks for the most amazing Spring-like weather we've been blessed with this week.  I've been soaking up the warm sunshine everyday running and working in our yard.

When it comes to pants it's debatable whether finding a perfect fit is just as hard as the swimsuit hunt.  It doesn't matter if your petite, tall, curvy or straight, a pair that fits the waist, hips and legs is a true challenge.

May I now take this opportunity to share with you the solution!  Recently I discovered the fabulous fits at Banana Republic.  Whether it's jeans, work trousers or fun prints for both weekdays or weekends they have a fit for all.

Green   Pink   Red  //  Fray Hem Blue   Fray Hem White   Fray Hem Distressed   //

For my work pants I'm all about the Avery.  They sit just right on the waist and in a cropped length I not only can avoid a trip to the tailor for hemming, but I can wear flats or heels.

I also like the Ryan.  They're a tad longer and in a slim leg I get a long lean line that's perfect for a sophisticated office look.  I'll take any pant that makes me look taller :)

If you're looking for a super sleek pant, Sloan is your fit.  With stretch that holds it's shape all day.

For a traditional trouser Logan is the ticket.  From the hip to hem they flow straight down not only give comfortable room for movement but is crazy flattering on the body.  I feel classy in these trousers!

And then there's fun pants.  I'm talking wide leg crops, prints, pleats and more!

Now, when it comes to denim BR's got you covered.  From classic dark washes to fun fray hems, I promise you'll find a pair or 3!  Jeans are hard gals but I have to give kudos where they're due and I'm sold on these blues (or whites, blacks, distressed ....).  They have a rise, stretch and length for every gal.

Sooooo, if you're a local Charlotte shopper join me for a style session this weekend Friday & Saturday to find your perfect fit AND 40% pants!!!

So, as promised, here are 5 different ways I plan to style this dress for the Winter season.
Now, come Spring/Summer I'll be ditching the jackets and boots for sandals and maybe a fun silk scarf and/or bright colored jewelry.

Friday 5: Signature Color

"Pink is my Signature Color" - Shelby Eatenton Latcherie

'Steel Magnolias' is my 2nd favorite movie (after 'Gone with the Wind' of course) and if you're not familiar shame on you!  I mean you can't go wrong with the colors blush and bashful :)

Oh and let's not forget Jackie O. and her iconic pink suit.  Swoon!

I've loved the color pink my whole entire life.  While I don't wear it as much or in the same way as I did in my younger years I still incorporate it frequently.  In fact, my formal living room is decorated in blush pink.

Pink makes me feel pretty and feminine.

When the latest J Crew catalog came in the mail this week I was giddy to see all the pink pieces!

Here are 5 of my favorites ....

Truth: At least 1 of these is going to make its way into my closet :)

Bow Blouse:  In 100% silk and the most precious shade of carnation pink it's a piece you'll wear forever!  With suiting or layered under a sheath dress to a pair of jeans, this blouse is a classic.

Houndstooth Jacket & Skirt:  Houndstooth is my most favorite print so duh I love this matching set in pink.  A modern and sophisticated version of the trend Jackie set back in the 60's. Timeless.
You don't have to have the coordinating look.  Split them up for endless outfit pairings.

Coat:  How ladylike is this coat?!!  Fresh and feminine it won't just keep you warm, it'll keep you smiling a pretty smile.

Bangle:  For when you just need a subtle touch of happy.

Friday 5: Stripes

TGIF!!! That’s the first thing I say on Friday mornings on my daily call with Mr on his drive to work.
Side Note:  I can’t wait to have him home for good and I can say it first thing when we open our eyes in person!

July 4th is pretty much my favorite holiday!!! Right after Easter, because let’s be real nothing compares to the sacrifice on the cross.  But the sacrifice of the men and women for our country is one of utmost honor.  What a blessing to live in a free country where we are afforded such privilege!!

Growing up my family did it up big for the 4th of July.  There were hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, lots of red white and blue decorations, always an angel food cake with berries and my Uncle Jeff manning the fireworks.  There’s something so magical about twirling sparklers in the dark!

Once I met Mr, 10 years ago WHAT?!!, we made it a tradition to celebrate at the beach.  Salty Toes and Sandy Kisses J
And since he’s been a US Naval Officer the past several years it’s been extra special.
This year we’re taking a turn from our tradition and bringing the party inland to our home in the Queen City.  We will be toasting America with our friends and I couldn’t be happier.

So finally to this Friday’s 5, I’m sharing stripes because stars aren’t for fashion but best used for wishes.
Stripes are classic, a bit nautical and will never steer your wrong when it comes to style.

I scouted these striped pieces from J Crew.  I own the shorts and have my eye on the skirt (it’s now 40% off so it may be just the push I need to bring it home).  The dress is a forever piece.  I have a few striped dresses so no need for more.  The one piece swimsuit is so super cute, but I’m just not ready to give up my bikinis – check back in 5 years.  This off the shoulder top, if you don’t have one yet, is so pretty.  I have it in white but see no need to have multiple of the same style considering they are casual/weekend only and won’t get enough wear to justify.

Chanel your patriotic spirit by adding stripes to your look this weekend and/or America’s signature colors red, white & blue.

FYI:  I’m wearing this red white and blue ensemble today – in case you ever wonder if I really do wear what I blog about.

Friday 5: 5 min Face

The 5 min face was the beginning of learning to primp for me and it’s been a practice I’ve continued.  My Mamma taught me how to apply my makeup.  Despite her instruction, I struggled in the beginning and it was embarrassingly a bit loud in my high school years (think bright blush and blue eye shadow ekk!)  because I had not yet matured to the realization that makeup is for enhancing your natural beauty not to be used like paint on a canvas. Over the years I’ve added to my makeup routine with eyeliners, highlighters, primers etc…

Subtlety is key gals.  God made our faces beautiful so makeup should simply define and highlight.

I’ll admit during the work week and for church I put on a full face but now that it’s Summer I like to keep it simple on the weekends and while on vacation.  It’s also healthy for your skin to lighten up on the products.
Mr loves it when I’m more natural.  Most menfolk do.  The more casual your dress, hair and makeup are the more your natural beauty shines!

So here are my 5 favorite products for my 5 minute face:

Foundation
My gal pal introduced me to this foundation and I’m sold for life!  Yes, it’s a bit expensive but it lasts over 6 months and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.  It’s light weight yet provides great coverage all day.

Blush
This blush is award winning!  It’s a peachy pink with a slight luster giving all skin complexions a perfect rosy cheek.

Brow Powder
Having red locks means that my brows are very light in color.  They’re also very thin.  I believe that eyebrows are very important as they frame the face.  I had a hard time finding a product that would complement my hair color and look natural.  This powder is light and really makes my eyes and face more defined. I use a flat brush to apply into my natural brow adding just a bit of darkening and depth.

Mascara
I’ve been wearing this one for many many years.  I’ve tried so many other and I always come back to this one.  I have found that mascara is a very personal thing for each individual gal. I don’t believe there is a one mascara fits all.  You have to find what works for your lashes.  Think of it like your hair – we all have different elements to work with.  This mascara lengthens and separates.  I don’t really need the volume.  I do not use waterproof as I feel that it is harsh on your lashes and causes more breakage because it’s so hard to remove at the end of the day.

Lipgloss
Another long term staple, this gloss has enough pigment for my liking and stays on the best.  I’m a lipstick gal all the way because I like saturated pigments that last.  I have tiny lips and need all the color I can get.  I also like the purple-ish color.  It’s softer than my go-to classic red and perfect for when I want a more natural look.

Friday 5: Snack Attack

TGIF!!! I've never had a Friday I didn't look forward to ...  ok maybe not never but it's very very rare.

I warned you that my 'Friday 5' post would be a bit random but so is life.

It may sound silly but snacks are a big part of my everyday life routine.  Let me first be clear I am NOT a foodie!!! I get little to no excitement when it comes to something yummy; sigh I know it's epically weird and I'm basically a unicorn but I eat for nutrition, fuel and to make my belly stop hurting.

Because I exercise daily I'm hungry every 2-3 hours.  It's rather annoying and inconvenient but I've managed it by always having snacks in my purse, car and in my office desk drawer.

I also try and eat as non processed as possible.  I intake several types of fruit and vegetables every single day.  When it comes to snacks, finding something prepackaged that doesn't contain chemicals and processing is very hard.  So I do the best I can in selecting natural items and ones that contain protein to help fuel my muscles.

So here are some of the snacks I eat regularly ...

Skinny Pop:
aka 'Crack in a Bag'.  Man do I Love popcorn and these yummy kernels will have you shoveling by the handful!  You can purchase it in gigantic bags at the big bulk stores or in individual size bags perfect for taking to work.  FYI the original flavor is my go-to.

Fruit Sticks:
I discovered this snack from one of my mom gal pals.  They're actually manufactured as kid snacks but I find them just as delicious for grown ups.

Jerky:
These dehydrated slivers of meat come in tons of yummy flavors and packed full of protein.  They'll keep you going when you have long stretches between meals.

Nut Thins:
I'm not a cracker person because they're packed full of bleached carbs and unhealthy junk.  These don't contain flour and instead made from nuts so again another snack with protein.  They're crunchy and addicting!

Larabars:
I saved the best for last.  These bars are my jam!  I've been eating them for over 7 years now.  They are made of very few ingredients with absolutely no additives.  The best part is that they literally taste  like dessert!  Lemon is my most favorite but I haven't met one I didn't like.

You can find most of these at your local grocery; stock up so you're ready for the next Snack Attack!

Friday 5: Sweat Session

This edition of my Friday 5 is all about styling for your sweat sessions!  Because this weekend I’m headed to Atlanta with two of my best gal pals to run a half marathon!!!

Just looking at the weather report has me breaking a sweat! It’s going to be a scorching hot weekend.  13.1 miles in Hotlanta has a whole new meaning!!!
“WHAT?!!!”  ‘Are you crazy?!!’ That’s been the reaction I get when I tell people our race is this weekend.  Genuine concern and fear, stricken their faces in sympathy of the torturous run we are going to have in such high temps.

I have to confess, I had a moment of panic this week thinking about how taxing it’s going to be running in that heat.  But I can’t focus on that.  We have trained so hard and have enjoyed the challenge of pushing our bodies.  This isn’t a first for any of us when it comes to half marathons but life is different than it has been in our younger years, as we are all busier in our careers and those 2 gal each have a little. So our sense of accomplishment bears more weight as we balance increasing responsibilities.  Say a prayer for us!

Gals, I believe strongly in sweating almost every day!  Exercise is a passion of mine and something I thoroughly enjoy.  I can’t stress enough just how important it is to take care of your body. And let’s be real, the aesthetic benefits are great too!  Being in good health is a blessing, one you should never take for granted. I love challenging my muscles and strengthening my heart.  There’s an amazing satisfaction that comes with pushing your body beyond what you think you can do.

Exercise is a personal thing.  I enjoy more weight lifting and plyometrics than I do cardio activities but I make sure I have a balance.  The key is to find what you like and do it!  There’s no magic routine or guidelines.  I will say, you have to do what works for you and what works for your body.  Maybe it’s running, spinning, playing a sport, weight lifting, swimming or yoga (man have I tried to like it but I just can’t embrace the calm!).  Maybe you like classes at the gym or maybe working out to dvd’s in your living room fits best.  Whatever you decide to do, make it a challenge! And do it several times a week – there is always time you just have to make it a priority.

Nobody ever regrets a work out!

So in styling for your sweat sessions, it’s all about function … ok I’m not going to lie, it’s about looking good too.  Athletic apparel is the fastest and largest growing segment in the retail world.  I see people strutting around in their gym clothes every day and everywhere.  It’s not for me – I believe they are for exercising exclusively and only appropriate outside of those parameters if running quick errands directly after.  Wear real clothes ladies!

Mr picks on me for wanting specific colors and designs, but I see it this way.  If price is the same why not opt for the prettier one?! Right?!!  It makes me feel good to look good, even when sweating!

Always try on and pick pieces that are comfortable, functional and cool.

This is what I’ll be wearing to run the half marathon on Sunday….

Zipper Sports Bra
It’s high impact and full coverage (containment is necessary!).  Lock & Load! I prefer the zippered bras as they are easier to remove when you’re sweaty and sore.
Mesh Tank:
Because the bra is supportive on its own, I like my tanks loose and light.  The mesh does just that and in a cool design.
Shorts:
These are new to me as I’ve worn these Nike shorts for 15 years.  I highly recommend them!  The waist band is so comfortable, no rubbing what so ever and they have a zipper pocket in the back and two mesh ones on the side.
Shoes:
I’ve been wearing these for 15 years also.  I’ve taken the treadmill fit tests several times and still these are the best for my feet when it comes to running.  Wear quality and what’s best for your feet and stride.
Earphones:
These are amazing!  Upbeat tunes are the key to distract from the pain as well as keep your spirits up, distracting you from being bored.  I catch myself singing and rocking a little when a good jam comes on.

Louise

I consider myself lucky to have a ‘double’ name.  Louise is a hand-me-down name from my great grandma, grandma and Mamma.  I’m the 4th so it means a lot to carry it on. I was also born in the early 80’s where Sarah was on the popular list so it helped to distinguish. Louise isn’t so common, but I love it! Oh and it means ‘Beautiful’ J

So imagine my twinkle when I discovered the shoe line ‘Louise Et Cie’.  Finally my not-so-common double name was famous!  AND the shoes,  A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!!!
I’m not what most would consider a big shoe person.  I like classic and comfortable.  Compared to most gals my shoe inventory reflects quality over quantity  Salvatore will always be my first shoe love but Louise Et Cie is high on my list of favorites.

These shoes are so well made!  The designs are traditional with a modern twist so they’re sure to last over the changing trends.  One of the defining aspects of this shoe line is that there are plenty of mid height heels.  Personally, I prefer mid heels on my painful feet.  Flats aren’t always comfortable or dressy enough and high heels just plain hurt! I also find that a mid heel height is not only more wearable but very classy.  And I’m keepin it classy everyday!

Remember those pink heeled sandals from this Friday 5 post … I couldn’t resist and ordered them! The brown box was waiting for me when I returned from Memorial Day at the beach.

I’ve rounded up some of the beautiful shoes from the current Louise Et Cie line for you.
I shop them at Nordstrom, Dillards and Louise Et Cie.

PS.  In case you didn’t know she’s the wife of designer Vince Camuto.
P.S.S. I really want to meet her!

Charlotte's in Charlotte

It's here!!! Finally a Charlotte's in Charlotte!  I've been waiting all summer to say that :)

Charlotte's is a boutique that I discovered during undergrad in Wilmington, NC.  Since then, they have moved that store and have 2 locations in Raleigh at North Hills & Cameron Village.  Charlotte's is where I purchased my first pair of gold Jack Rodgers over 10 years ago (before anyone was really wearing them), where Mr purchased my first Valentine's Day gift, a strand of baroque pearls, and where I got beautiful gifts and accessories both for myself and my home.
It's one of my absolute favorites!!!

The store's inventory has certainly grown to carry even more of my favorite things.  From apparel, jewelry, gifts, home decor, baby, even things for your beau and so much more.

Beyond the fabulous collections you'll find, the staff is over the top!  You're always greeted with a smile and they are graciously helpful in finding just what you're looking for, and sometimes what you didn't know you were looking for but must have :).

My in-laws were in town visiting to see our new home and after breakfast at one of my favorite spots, I insisted we visit Charlotte's for their grand opening.  We arrived just a few minutes after they opened their doors for the first time in the Queen City and I was immediately impressed.
I had an idea of what it would look like as I frequent the other locations and I've been following on Instagram & Facebook.

Charlotte's is celebrating 25 years this Friday!  Cheers to you!!

What gorgeous and shiny decor for your home! Including art by Anne Neilson, glassware, and frames

Candles, books and frames that make great gifts

A mix of modern and classic home decor and even fine leather boots

I've added many pieces fine pieces to my wardrobe over the years from Charlotte's that include designers Elizabeth McKay, Sail to Sable, Trina Turk, Annie Griffin, and so many more

The jewelry is sure to sparkle and be noticed!  Baubles from Julie Vos, Kate Spade, Moon & Lola, Sylvia Benson, Boho Beads and even fine pieces such as Michele Watches and designer vintage.

The menfolk can be hard to shop for, here you'll find classic gifts your beau will love

How precious are these?!!  I have a feeling I'll be gifting a lot of these as all my gal pals seem to have baby fever

And for us Southern gals and our love to monogram Everything
Confession: I refuse to count the monograms throughout my home

I came home with this framed mirror and have it displayed on my antique secretary in my formal living room.

If you're a NC gal you must visit Charlotte's here in Charlotte or in Raleigh!!
Or shop online

This is how I roll - higher the hair closer to heaven
My Grandma & Mamma taught me all about hot rollers

Bigger is better #redhairdontcare

My new neighbors had me over for dinner to welcome me to the hood and you should never come empty handed so I made one of my favorite sweet treats. A healthier lemon pound cake.  And like everything else in my world - dress it beautifully in a decorative bundt pan

I've made every attempt to kiss his face off!

It's important to just sit back and enjoy life and the moments that matter.

Dress Your Days Beautifully with Lots of Love & Happiness
